Grain Summer Workshops at Open Satellite!

Do you know any Seattle-area teens curious about design?

Grain is leading two two-week design workshops for teens (12 - 15 years old) at Bellevue's Open Satellite residency space this summer and we are looking participants!

Teens will walk away with a design process tool kit that includes concept development, learning how to refine ideas, creating prototypes, and developing presentation skills. The hands-on workshop will culminate in a weekend public showcase of teen prototypes and products that will coincide with the Bellevue Arts Museum's Art Fair.

The workshops will run June 28th - July 10th and July 12th - July 23rd with the special weekend exhibition at Open Satellite July 24th - 25th.

Bellevue By Design

If you are a Seattle-area teen interested in art and design, you should check out this new program called Bellevue By Design that Chelsea Green of Grain will be leading at Open Satellite this July 13 - 31st, 2009. The program will run Monday - Friday 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. Here is the full description:

Bellevue By Design is a three-week, college prep/intensive exploration for local teens passionate about art, design, and architecture. Participants will engage in the public and private identity-building processes of their hometown. Through meetings with local artists and community stakeholders, guided field work, and studio art making, teens will have the opportunity to reshape their city with a rich (and unexpected) array of tools and information. A final presentation of the teens’ research, process, and design solutions will be publicly presented at Open Satellite or at a Bellevue partner organization.

To learn more about the program please contact Laura O'Quin at laura@opensatellite.org or 425.454.7355.

Heroes and Pilots: Vote Here

Our very own Sami Nerenberg is set to take off on her pilot eco-home makeover show, Room by Room! After Timberland has chosen her as an EarthKeeper Hero of 2009, this summer, 10 inner-city teens will compete in six weeks of eco-design bootcamp to be the best eco-designer and win their very own healthy home make-over!

Within the home one can find environmental burdens such as lead paint, mold, pests, and toxic cleaning products under the sink that can lead to things like learning disabilities, asthma, and even cancer. These burdens fall hardest on low-income often minority communities. It's her goal to share ways to make healthy, beautiful and affordable changes that we can all do during this time of uncertainty and rebuilding.

With the Majora Carter Group as her media consultant, Timberland as her publicity outlet, RISD and Brown University as her cohorts, this project is set to take off!  But she needs your help!

Vote for her idea on ideablob here so she can win $10,000 to pilot the show!!!

Brick by brick, block by block, Room by Room, together we can help to restore and redesign this nation!! Design for America!
